The Institute of Brain Science (IBS) was established in the fall of 2006, with the PhD program starting at 2008. IBS is located at the 7th and 8th floors in the Library, Information and Research Building. Our faculties are organized into three research focus groups: Clinical Neurobiology, Neuroinformatics and Brain Imaging, and Experimental Neurobiology. Current research areas include: functional brain imaging, clinical neurology and psychiatry, bioinformatics, bioengineering, neurophysiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology.

To train (or cultivate) researchers in the field of brain science with the capability of independent research and leadership in multi-disciplinary areas.
To make contribution to the academic, clinical and industrial communities.
    With our focus on removing barriers to promote multi-disciplinary collaboration, we emphasize on integrating clinical, engineering and basic researches for developing cutting-edge knowledge and techniques. IBS provides a highly interactive academic environment and state-of-the-art research facilities to train next-generation researchers in brain science.
Faculties in IBS offer an integrative core course on brain science and several introductory courses for the students with different backgrounds. Based on the feedback from the students who took the courses, the faculty members meet regularly to amend the direction and content of the courses. In addition, various in-depth professional courses are also provided for students in each focus group. Course contents are modified yearly according to the opinion of review committee.
Cross-disciplinary research: Many faculties in IBS are involved in cross-disciplinary research combining: clinical and basic research, engineering and bio-medical research, and industry-academia cooperation. We expect a strong collaboration between faculties to promote overall quality and quantity of our research.

Innovative technology: Many faculties in IBS have developed their own original technologies and products. With the collaboration within this institution or university, we aim to create more novel research techniques. With this advantage, we are establishing cooperation nation-wide in order to accelerate the research findings and to benefit the public health.

Published milestone papers: Faculties in IBS have great achievement in their research fields. In addition to keeping up with the quantities for research, we emphasize on improving research quality, in particular publications of papers with substantial impact.

Taking advantage of resource in Brain Research Center (BRC): BRC in National Yang-Ming University has established several core technologies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and animal behavior facilities. By taking advantage of these core facilities, coupled with the innovative technology exclusively available to IBS, we aim to make IBS one of the best brain research institutes in Taiwan, or even in the world.

  Curriculum Planning
In addition to background knowledge in brain science, a wide selection of courses are available in IBS in attempts to actively provide students of different disciplines with stimulation from various research areas in this field. Through multi-disciplinary integration, IBS encourages creativity from our students. Coupled with required rotations in different laboratories in IBS, students may gain access to various research fields in brain science. In the future, additional advanced courses will be provided in IBS, cultivating those young and talented students to mature into extraordinary researcher in cross-disciplinary research or, alternatively, applying the knowledge they have learned from IBS to the biomedical industry.
IBS is integrating various kinds of resource including: available software, equipments, research personnel, and diverse research areas including expertise in brain science and neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, information technology and biomedical engineering, neuroimaging, clinical neurology and psychiatry, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology etc. Aimed at becoming one of the top-notch brain science research institutes in the world, IBS targets at the cross-disciplinary research and clinical application as long-term objectives.
